Lierne with its sparse population, isolated villages, mountainous landscape and shared border with Sweden has until now remained a hidden secret enjoyed mainly by trekkers and nature enthusiasts from Norway’s third largest city Trondheim.
Wild Norway is working with Lierne municipality and National Park centre to offer a small range of ‘off the beaten track’ nature, culture and adventure experiences.
At the heart of the initiative is the Lierne National Park Centre in the small village of Nordli. This pretty village located on the shore of Laksjøn is quietly turning itself into a hub for adventure travel. There are new community based initiatives supporting the development of accommodations, a lakeshore café, restaurant and a chic chocolate boutique with lakeside terrace. Craft beer is also being brewed locally and there’s a thriving cottage industry harvesting fresh produce from field, forest and lake.
Lierne National Park covers 330 square kilometres (129 square miles) and lies just west of its larger nearby neighbour Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park, the third largest national park in Norway. Lierne National Park has traditionally been known for the high density of European Brown Bear but the high mountain landscape is also home to healthy populations of moose, beaver, wolverine and lynx.
Close to Nordli is Ulendeltaet, a fresh water river delta that is a designated Ramsar wetlands site of significant importance. The wetlands offer exceptional birding and wildlife watching opportunities with seasonal wildfowl migrations, nesting Osprey, the rare Great Snipe, abundant moose and healthy beaver populations.
Adventure enthusiasts can trek with local guides to the towering 130-meter drop Sisselfossen waterfall and enjoy spectacular views over the Sandøldalen valley and Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park. For thrill seekers there’s the opportunity to rappel Sisselfossen’s cliffs and falls.
